1. Why Generate High and Reduce Low?
High-pressure steam has a significantly lower specific volume than low-pressure steam. Generating and distributing steam at 10.5 kg/cm² allows a plant to use much smaller diameter pipe headers compared to distributing at 2 kg/cm², cutting initial piping costs and reducing standing radiant heat losses. However, process equipment (reactors, evaporators, press platens) operates safer and transfers higher latent heat at lower pressures. A Pressure Reducing Station (PRS) bridges this gap.
2. Anatomy of a High-Integrity Skid-Mounted PRS
A reliable PRS station consists of sequentially arranged components mounted on a structural steel base skid:
- Inlet Isolation Valve: Piston or bellows-sealed high-pressure shutoff valve.
- Moisture Separator: Cyclone or baffle type separator with steam trap set to remove entrained water droplets and prevent valve seat wire-drawing.
- Y-Type Strainer: Fine stainless steel mesh installed horizontally to capture weld slag and pipe scale without collecting water.
- Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV): Self-actuated pilot-operated or pneumatic control valve throttling the steam flow.
- Downstream Safety Relief Valve: Full-lift safety valve sized to discharge full boiler output if the PRV fails wide open.
3. Dual-Stream Redundancy for Zero-Downtime Operations
In continuous manufacturing facilities (textiles, chemical reactors, paper mills), process steam cannot be shut off for valve cleaning or diaphragm servicing. BS Energy India designs Dual-Stream PRS Skids featuring two 100% capacity parallel streams. One stream operates while the other serves as immediate standby, allowing maintenance without plant downtime.
