1. The Engineering Purpose of an Industrial Chimney
An industrial chimney stack serves two essential functions: generating the natural draft that draws combustion gases out of the furnace or boiler, and dispersing residual emissions at high elevation to prevent localized pollution and comply with regulatory mandates.
2. Understanding Natural Thermal Draft
Natural draft is produced by the density difference between hot flue gases inside the chimney and cooler ambient air outside. Because hot flue gas is lighter than cold air, it rises, creating a slight negative pressure at the base of the chimney that draws fresh combustion air into the furnace. Chimney height and flue gas temperature directly determine the theoretical draft produced.
3. Calculating Compliant Stack Heights under CPCB / TNPCB Rules
In India, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Boards (such as TNPCB in Tamil Nadu) establish statutory minimum chimney heights based on boiler capacity and fuel sulfur content. For oil and solid fuel boilers, height is often governed by formulaic sulfur dioxide emission estimates, with a statutory minimum of 30 meters for industrial utility boilers.
4. Structural Engineering: Self-Supporting vs. Guy-Wired
Selecting structural configuration depends on space and height:
- Self-Supporting Chimneys: Freestanding conical base stacks anchored directly into a concrete foundation block. Designed to withstand coastal wind speeds (up to 200 km/h in Chennai coastal zones) without external wires. Ideal where ground space is constrained.
- Guy-Wired Chimneys: Lighter cylindrical shells supported by high-tensile galvanized wire ropes at 120° angles. Highly economical for tall, slender stacks where ample ground footprint is available.
